WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM YOUR YOGA CLASS?

In the modern Yoga world, there are different yoga teachers, and class styles vary. Some are very physical, others much more subtle, focusing on building connections between body and mind, working with the breath and energy flow.

My usual yoga practice includes dynamic movements, moving between positions with the breath or repeated transitions.  It is mobilizing the whole body - preparing the joints and increasing circulation in the muscles. This part of the practice enhances mobility, strength and concentration.

The dynamic portion of the practice is usually followed by some static yoga poses held for long enough so the muscles can release tension, fascia can loosen up. Staying in a position where we can breathe without a struggle is helping the mind to wind down. This part of the practice can greatly improve your flexibility and resilience.

I also teach traditional yogic breathing practices (pranayama), relaxation and guided meditation as integral part of yoga practice. It helps to tap deeper into the parasympathetic nervous system (that’s the rest-and-digest division), release muscle tension, and relieve stress.

I personally prefer slower and more purposeful movements, with a careful attention, which leads you to feel calm, centred and at ease, physically and mentally.

WHAT DO I NEED TO PRACTICE YOGA?

You should wear comfortable clothing which allows a full range of movement, e.g. raising the arms above the head and bending over/crouching down. Yoga is practised with bare feet. Have extra layers and a blanket available for relaxation.

You will need a non-slip yoga mat. If your yoga mat is new, please unroll it before the first lesson.

You might also need blocks, yoga belt/strap and a bolster to help make your yoga practice more accessible. These are not essential, but many people find it brings more comfort when practicing yoga.

Alternatives for these items:

  • An alternative for a blanket - a big beach towel

  • An alternative for yoga blocks - thick books or a firm cushion

  • An alternative for a yoga belt - any belt

  • An alternative for a bolster - a large firm cushion

  • If you wish to purchase any of these items I can advise you on this

You might also need drinking water, especially in warm weather.
